Hang Seng Management College (HSMC) follows the footsteps of its successful predecessor, Hang Seng School of Commerce (HSSC), which was founded in 1980 with funding from the S H Ho Foundation, several Hang Seng Bank founding directors, and Hang Seng Bank Limited. From 1980 to 2009, HSSC was a pioneering and leading provider of post-secondary programmes in business and related areas.

In response to the Chief Executive’s Policy Address in 2009 which highlights the growing significance of quality private universities in Hong Kong, HSSC, in 2010, was re-structured into Hang Seng Management College (HSMC), a non-profit private university-level institution registered under the Post Secondary Colleges Ordinance (Cap 320) to offer bachelor’s and above degree programmes in diversified disciplines.

HSMC aspires to become a leading private university in Hong Kong. HSMC has 5 Schools (BusinessCommunicationDecision Sciences, Humanities & Social Science, and Translation) with a student population of around 5,000 and 200 full-time academic staff members. HSMC currently offers 14 4-year bachelor’s (Honours) degree programmes, namely, Business Administration (with concentrations in Accounting, Banking & Finance, and Marketing), Corporate GovernanceFinancial Analysis, Management, Journalism & Communication,  Convergent Media and Communication Technology, Data Science & Business Intelligence, Management Science & Information ManagementSupply Chain Management, Applied and Human-Centred Computing, Asian Studies, Chinese, English, and Translation with Business, together with the College’s first master’s degree programme — MA in Translation (Business and Legal). Many of these programmes are unique and the first of its kind in the region. All programmes were accredited by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) and recognised by the HKSAR Government.

Desired Graduate Attributes (iGPS)

The College aims to nurture students to possess the following “desired graduate attributes: iGPS”:

  1. Intellectual Competence (i): a solid foundation in relevant academic disciplines, and the ability to think critically to solve problems proactively, and to engage in life-long learning.
  2. Generic Skills (G): the development of skills in:
    • languages in both English and Chinese (Cantonese and Putonghua);
    • use of information technology and data analysis;
    • interpersonal communication;
    • teamwork and leadership.
  3. Personal Development (P): self-awareness, ethical values, emotion management, personal effectiveness and character.
  4. Social Engagement (S): the willingness to serve the community and a commitment to acting for the betterment of the society.

The acronym iGPS also carries the symbolic meaning of “I” and the “GPS”; with “I” referring to the individual student and “GPS” taking on the metaphor of “Global Positioning System” which can guide the development of the student through the diverse educational experience at HSMC.

Recognitions and Awards

With the concerted efforts of the College community, there have been a number of important achievements.

In recent years, HSMC was the only institution in Hong Kong which obtained the ISO 9001 Certification in Quality Management System (QMS) on its degree programmes, as well as a full score of 5.0 in the CSR Index assessment on the College, both of which were issued by the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency.

From 2014 to 2016, HSMC received a total of HK$53 million research funding for 55 projects from the Research Grant Council of UGC, being the highest amount of the three-year cumulative funding and the highest number of awarded research projects among all the local self-financing degree-granting institutions.

The College received the highest recognition from the Hong Kong Green Building Council, which manifested its commitment on environmental protection and campus sustainability. Among the new buildings in the campus, the S H Ho Academic Building (Block A), the Sports and Amenities Centre (Block B), and the Lee Quo Wei Academic Building (Block D) achieved the “Platinum” rating of BEAM Plus (V1.1) certification, and the HSMC Jockey Club Residential Colleges also attained the “Platinum” rating of BEAM Plus (V1.2) certification. HSMC is the first higher education institution in Hong Kong as well as the first local university sports and amenities building and student residential complex to receive such a “Platinum” recognition. HSMC was also awarded “Finalist” in the Green Building Award 2014 and 2016. The above achievements affirm the College’s leading role in promoting green initiatives in the region.
