General
1. Why should I choose to study at HSMC?

Hang Seng Management College (HSMC) has committed tremendous resources in creating well-designed curricula, upgrading campus facilities and above all, assembling a high-calibre teaching team with experiences in university teaching and industry practice. Our programmes have been identified as quality programmes, having gone through rigorous validation processes by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ).

The College provides all-round business education to prepare students for professional contributions to and successful careers in the business community. With its close connections with large corporations, the College is able to provide many internship opportunities for our students.

On campus, you will be provided with quality education in generic skills, business knowledge and general education for your personal and professional development to meet the challenges in a workplace context at a professional level.

Off campus, our programmes also underline whole-person development, featuring community involvement activities, dormitory life and internships. All these will prepare you for a good career, a full life, healthy living, and active and responsible citizenship.

 

2. Which programmes does HSMC currently offer?

Five Degree Programmes and one Associate Degree Programme are currently on offer. They are:

3. What is the medium of instruction?
Top

English while a few modules related to General Education / Chinese Language may be taught in Cantonese.

 

4. Are all programmes offered by HSMC recognized in Hong Kong?
Top

Yes. All programmes currently offered by HSMC have been validated by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ). Referring to the Qualification Framework established by the Education Bureau (Please see below), the qualification of our Degree Programmes is equivalent to Level 5 while that of the Associate Degree Programme refers to Level 4:

5. Am I eligible to apply the HSMC programmes if I do not take any business-related subject in the secondary school?
Top

Yes. Students who do not take any business-related subject in the secondary school can choose to apply our programmes.

 

6. Are student exchange programmes / short-term study visit programmes available for HSMC students?
Top

Yes. HSMC has been in collaboration with overseas institutions and those in Mainland China for student exchange programmes and short-term study visit programmes with the view of broadening our students’ horizon and nurturing their global perspectives. For instance, students majoring in Translation with Business programme joined the exchange programmes in the University of Westminster in the UK and Beijing Foreign Studies University in Beijing, China, respectively last year. We are dedicated to expanding the network with prestigious institutions over the world in the hope that more exchange opportunities can be offered to our students to enrich their study lives.

 

7. Will HSMC students be given internship opportunities?
Top

Yes. Internship is one of the core modules of our Associate Degree Programme. For our Degree Programmes, internship opportunities are available for students to work at different corporations. Students not only put their knowledge into practice and earn the concrete working experience, but also enhance other skills such as interpersonal skill, communication skill, etc. from the internship programme. It is deemed as a consolidated foundation for their future career. For students’ internship performance, it will be assessed by both the hosting corporation and the module lecturer.

 

8. Upon completion of my Associate Degree Programme at HSMC, what is the subsequent study path?
Top

If your overall GPA is 2.5 or above, you can consider applying our Year 3 of HSMC degree programmes, degree programmes provided by other Hong Kong institutions or pursuing overseas studies. The admission requirements vary among institutions, basically subject to your overall GPA and/or interview performance.

 

9. For HSMC Associate Degree graduates, what is the percentage of entry to Degree Programmes?

According to the graduate survey in 2012, 66% of HSMC Associate Degree graduates were admitted to HSMC degree programmes while 13% of graduates enrolled in degree programmes offered by other Hong Kong institutions.

 

10. Who are non-local students?
Top

Non-local students are persons who enter Hong Kong for the study purpose without the right of abode or right to land in Hong Kong. They are required to obtain a student visa issued by the Director of Immigration before entry to Hong Kong.

 

11. What is the fee schedule of HSMC programmes for the 2013 entry?

12. Do I need to pay the 1-year tuition fee and other mandatory fees in one go?
Top

No. There are two installments a year. Students will be given a debit note for the required payment in due course and need to settle on or before the due date.

 

13. Are there any scholarships available at HSMC?
Top

Yes. In order to provide incentives to students to pursue academic excellence, HSMC offers various scholarships to students. We offer three categories of scholarships to eligible students, including Entrance Scholarships, Achievement Scholarships and Exchange Scholarships.

For Entrance Scholarships for the 2013 intake, first year’s tuition fee of Year 1 study of Degree Programme will be awarded to full-time Year 1 Degree entrants of the 2013-14 academic year who have achieved good academic results in the HKDSE / equivalent. The minimum criteria of which are:

i. At least Level 5 in 1 subject and Level 4 in 4 subjects in HKDSE; and
ii. Receive UGC-funded programme offer.

Final decision on the distribution of entrance scholarships will be made by HSMC.

 

14. Am I eligible to seek financial assistance from the HKSAR Government?
Top

Yes. You can seek financial assistance from the Student Financial Assistance Agency of the HKSAR Government if you are a Hong Kong citizen. You can choose to apply for a means-test “Financial Assistance Scheme for Post-secondary Students” (FASP) or the “Non-Means Test Loan Scheme” via HSMC. For details, please refer to the www.sfaa.gov.hk.

For non-local applicants who need a student visa to study in Hong Kong, you must fund your own study and living expenses in Hong Kong.

 

15. Does HSMC provide any on-campus hostels to students?
Top

Yes. HSMC students are eligible to apply for on-campus hostels on a competitive basis. In 2012-13, there are 206 places for students and the hostel fee is HK$850 per month. The hostel fee may be adjusted in the 2013-14 academic year.

For non-local students, on-campus hostels will be arranged for their FIRST YEAR of studies at HSMC ONLY.

16. What are the admission requirements for the 2013 intake?

Please refer to www.hsmc.edu.hk/en/admission_dp_er.php for the admission requirements of Degree Programmes and www.hsmc.edu.hk/en/admission_ad_er.php for that of Associate Degree Programme.

For students who possess qualifications other than HKALE / HKDSE, your applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

 

17. When is the application period for Degree and Associate Degree Programmes?

The application period for Degree and Associate Degree Programmes offered in the 2013-14 academic year is (local student) from 1 December 2012 to 15 August 2013 / (non-local student) from 1 December 2012 to 6 July 2013. Early application even without HKDSE / other examination results at current stage is highly encouraged as the programme(s) may stop receiving applications under different situations, e.g. the programme quota has been filled up.

 

18. Where can I obtain the application form?

The application form can be obtained from:

i. The Registry of Hang Seng Management College at Hang Shin Link, Siu Lek Yuen, Shatin in person; OR
ii. Sending a self-addressed envelope to the above address; OR
iii. Downloading the application form from www.hsmc.edu.hk

 

19. How many degree programme choices do I have? Will my choice(s) other than the first choice be considered?
Top

You are allowed to submit one application with a maximum of three degree programme choices. Your first programme choice will be mainly considered for admission. Your other choice(s) will also be processed but with a lower priority.

 

20. What kind of documents should be submitted together with the application form?
Top

The following documents need to be submitted together with the application form:

i. A copy of your Hong Kong ID / travel document;
ii. Recent two-year academic transcript(s), certificate(s) and public examination results; and
iii. Non-refundable application fee by cash or in a crossed cheque payable to “Hang Seng Management College”; Online applicants will receive an email of acknowlegement. You can download the debit note and settle the payment by selecting one of payment methods which is convenient to you.

 

21. How can I submit my application?

You can submit your application through one of the following channels:

i. Submit the completed and duly signed application form and supporting documents to the Registry in person; OR
ii. Post the completed and duly signed application form and supporting documents to the Registry of Hang Seng Management College, Hang Shin Link, Siu Lek Yuen, Shatin; OR
iii. HSMC Online Application System; OR
iv. E-App (www.eapp.gov.hk) (from 3 December 2012 to 19 May 2013 for first round; 27 May 2013 to 30 June 2013 for late round) (For DSE students only)

 

22. Can my English result in the HKDSE examination be replaced by other English examinations such as GCE, GCSE, IELTS, TOEFL, etc.?
Top

Yes in principle, but such situation will be further considered by the respective programme(s) and the outcome is at the discretion of the respective programme(s).

 

23. I am a local student and prepare to take another language in DSE instead of Chinese. Should I need to provide any certification to prove my Chinese language proficiency?
Top

HSMC normally accepts alternative Chinese Language qualifications (e.g. GCSE, GCE) in place of DSE Chinese. Such applications will be specially considered by the respective programme(s).

 

24. Will other languages i.e. French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Hindi and Urdu in the DSE be considered?
Top

The results of other languages will not be considered as the replacement of the Chinese Language result in the DSE. However, it can be considered as the elective subject result on a case-by-case basis.

 

25. I am a non-local student and interested in Degree Programmes / Associate Degree programme at HSMC. Do I need to possess a certain level of Chinese language? If yes, what should I do?
Top

According to the programme curriculum, students are required to undertake core modules which include a few modules to be taught in Cantonese. Therefore, applicants are suggested to possess a certain level of Chinese language.  You can choose to provide us with the proof of your Chinese language proficiency for our further consideration for admission.

 

26. Will applied learning subjects in DSE be considered?
Top

Applied learning subjects will only be considered for the admission of Associate Degree Programme, capped at 2 applied learning subjects.

 

27. Does HSMC accept combined certificate of HKCEE/HKALE/HKDSE?
Top

Yes. We accept combined certificate of HKCEE/HKALE/HKDSE as long as applicants’ qualifications meet our admission requirements (www.hsmc.edu.hk/en/admission_dp_er.php for Degree Programmes; www.hsmc.edu.hk/en/admission_ad_er.php for Associate Degree Programme).

 

28. Will my application to your College affect my JUPAS application?

No.

 

29. When will the admission interviews/tests be conducted?
Top

Admission interviews/tests will be conducted either in the first semester of the 2012-13 academic year, or the second semester after the completion of HKDSE, or even after the release of HKDSE results. Eligible applicants will be notified of interview/test arrangements including the date, time and venue in due course via email and/or by phone. Please note that applicants attending interviews/tests on different dates in the year will be considered on the same footing for admission.

 

30. Do all programmes require interviews?
Top

Yes in principle, interview performance is part of assessment in the admission decision. Some of programmes even require written tests ahead of interviews. Eligible applicants will be notified of interview/written test arrangements via email and/or by phone. Therefore, please ensure that your contact number, email address and postal address are correct and updated. You are advised to inform us of the update(s) if any by way of email/fax/phone.

 

31. What should I do if I am not able to attend the interview/test on the designated date and time?
Top

If you are not able to attend the interview/test, please inform us as soon as possible via email (registry@hsmc.edu.hk) or by phone (2252-9555). Alternative arrangement will be made for you if possible.

 

32. What is the format of the interview?
Top

The format of the interview varies among programmes. Normally group/individual interviews are conducted.

Arrangement after the release of public examination

33. What should I do after the release of HKDSE / other examination results?
Top

For applicants who have been given conditional offers AND the HKDSE / other examination results meet our admission requirements listed on the conditional offer, please provide us with the result slip and the non-refundable and non-transferable deposit of HK$6,000 in person before 12 noon,19 July 2013 to accept the offer. Please refer to the payment instruction enclosed with the confirmed offer / conditional offer.

For applicants who have been placed on the waiting list AND the HKDSE / other examination results meet our minimum admission requirements, you may choose to provide us with the result slip via email (registry@hsmc.edu.hk) or in person before 12 noon, 19 July 2013 for our re-consideration for admission.

For applicants who have submitted application but are awaiting written test / interview, AND the HKDSE / other examination results meet our minimum admission requirements, please provide us with the result slip via email (registry@hsmc.edu.hk) or in person for further arrangement.

 

34. Would it be possible for me to submit application (I) after the release of HKDSE / other examination results; or (II) after the release of JUPAS results?
Top

Yes. You need to submit the application form with supporting documents including the HKDSE / other examination result slip and the application fee of HK$100 per programme. Please ensure that your HKDSE results / other qualifications have met our minimum admission requirements before application. An interview and/or written test may be arranged for you subject to the decision made by the respective programme.

 

35. Will the deposit of HK$5,000 be refundable if I finally choose to enroll in another programme offered by one of universities other than HSMC?
Top

No. The deposit of HK$5,000 is normally non-refundable except the applicant of HSMC Associate Degree / Degree programme who has accepted an offer from an UGC-funded degree programme.

The applicant is required to submit the refund application by noon, 12 August 2013 after the JUPAS offer announcement. There will be a non-refundable administration fee of HK$500.

How had HSSC been transformed into HSMC?

The Hang Seng School of Commerce (HSSC) was established by the Hang Seng Bank in 1980 as a private school to offer Diploma programmes in Business Studies to school leavers. To satisfy the requirement for registration under the Post-secondary College Ordinance (Cap 320), the HSSC set up the Hang Seng Management College (HSMC) to be the degree granting body of all degree programmes duly accredited by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) (http://www.hkcaavq.edu.hk).

Is HSMC a recognized institution leading to operate degree programmes?

Top

Yes. The HSSC received the Institutional Review (IR) status from HKCAAVQ in 2008, which recognized that the School has overall appropriate academic environment to operate programmes, meeting the standards of Bachelor Degree level at the QF level 5. Later, the HSSC set up HSMC, which was registered under the Post-secondary College Ordinance (Cap 320), offering all degree programmes accredited by HKCAAVQ.

Are all programmes offered by HSMC recognized in Hong Kong?

Yes. All of our degree programmes had already been accredited by HKCAAVQ. They are currently registered at Qualifications Register (QR) (www.hkqr.gov.hk) and recognized under the Qualifications Framework (QF) (http://www.hkqf.gov.hk).
